The Taylor Village Retail Center is located at the center of the Taylor Properties developments between College Avenue and New Cut Road. Isaac Taylor came to Main Street Ellicott City as a jeweler and merchant in 1912, building the Taylor 's Furniture store and the Ellicott Theater. Both these businesses were sold after Isaac and his son Irving acquired the psychiatric hospital at the top of College Avenue in 1939; Dr. Irving Taylor together with his wife Edith developed the hospital and eventually renamed it Taylor Manor Hospital in 1954. Their son Dr. Bruce Taylor took over the family businesses in 1979 after completing his training at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Over the years the family gradually acquired over 600 acres surrounding the hospital. Since the 1970's these parcels have been carefully planned to bring about the current Taylor Properties developments. The land is expected to be completely developed by approximately 2025. Isaac was always a frugal person who avoided waste of any resources. His son and grandson have incorporated these values into the design of Howard County 's first “ Green Building ” to be Silver Certifed according to LEED standards (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design). Jared Spahn of Old Town Construction has been instrumental in the design build process to assist architect Kate McCullough in finalizing the initial design after the untimely death of the designer Greg Mitchell. The building will offer superior indoor air quality with low emissions standards for paints, glues, carpets, and building materials, including the absence of any vinyl in the building. Kate has worked with Natural Logic's, Iris Amdor to specify products which use a high-recycled material content. Howard Rutherford of SRBR also served as a consultant to assist in insuring that the design meets strict energy guidelines to qualify for a Silver LEED Energy Certificate and State tax credits. The facility will be surrounded by single-family homes being built by Patriot, Dorsey Family Homes, Richmond American Homes and Ryan Homes, as well as an age-restricted community of town homes by Pulte Homes and condominium homes by NVR. The Taylor Village Retail Center is across the street from the project's Community Center, which includes three outdoor pools, two tennis courts and a tot lot, along with the Homeowner's Association Building. Dr. Bruce Taylor, who is spearheading the project, noted that an indoor swimming pool and senior center, and a possible future bank and day care center are also planned as part of the Taylor Village Center. Mr. Jesse Krauch of Historic Ellicott Properties will be the Leasing Manager for the Retail Center. Jesse said “we hope to attract a restaurant, convenience store, bakery, video store, cleaner, barber and beauty shop, wine and cheese merchant, as well as office tenants to provide a mix of services to the community.” He is delighted the building includes amenities to allow workers and patrons to ride bicycles or electric vehicles to the stores and offices. Historic Ellicott Properties was founded in 1972 by Isaac and Irving Taylor along with Samuel Caplan to help revitalize commercial and residential properties in the historic district of Ellicott City. Isaac built the Taylor 's Furniture Store prior to selling it in 1943 as he was also operating Taylor Manor Hospital. Bruce Taylor, Isaac's grandson and Irving 's son has been operating the company since 1979 and is now President. The company's restoration efforts have been recognized by the Howard County government and the local Ellicott City Historic Society with an award for the splendid renovation of the Main Street Herb Shop just above Caplan's Department Store. Historic Ellicott Properties offers numerous residential and retail spaces on and near Main Street in Ellicott City for long term lease. Taylor Service Company also works with several other entities offering commercial leasing opportunities: ■ in Eldersburg in Carroll County along Liberty Road, route 26, near route 32 |
