Historic Ellicott Properties was founded in 1972 by Isaac and Irving Taylor along with Samuel Caplan to help revitalize commercial and residential properties in the historic district of Ellicott City. Isaac built the Taylor’s Furniture Store prior to selling it in 1943 as he was also operating Taylor Manor Hospital. Bruce Taylor, Isaac’s grandson and Irving’s son has been operating the company since 1979 and is now President. The company’s restoration efforts have been recognized by the Howard County government and the local Ellicott City Historic Society with an award for the splendid renovation of the Main Street Herb Shop just above Caplan’s Department Store.

Historic Ellicott Properties extensively renovated the Rosenstock Property in the mid 1980’s. At this time both the interior and exterior of the buildings were totally restored and repaired while the façade uniting the structures with a unified false front was left unchanged. The November 1999 fire which destroyed the property is believed to have started from a cigarette discarded in the alley behind the building. The exterior wood siding along with a gas leak from the adjoining structure contributed to the structure’s loss despite the sprinkler system inside. Fortunately, there was no loss of life or serious injury to anyone in the fire.

The new, fully sprinklered, steel and concrete structure at 8095 Main Street has
been built by Old Town Construction Company under the direction of Jared Spahn. The building was designed by the late architect Greg Mitchell following details from the original historic building. The design inspiration for the iron work on the balconies of the new building comes from an old photograph of the original structure. Our astute Property Manager, Jesse Krauch, found the picture in the basement of another of our buildings, and realized its importance to our restoration efforts after the fire.  The third floor offers two luxury apartments while the first and second floors are retail.

Historic Ellicott Properties offers numerous residential and retail spaces on and near Main Street in Ellicott City for long term lease.  Taylor Service Company also works with several other entities offering commercial leasing opportunities:      ■ in Eldersburg in Carroll County along Liberty Road, route 26, near route 32
